What Is a Platelet-Rich Plasma Injection?

A platelet-rich plasma injection is a procedure that aims to concentrate a patient’s platelets in the damaged areas of their body. Platelets are cells in the blood that contain the proteins called growth factors and other substances that promote the healing process. To make a PRP, a sample of the patient’s blood is taken and processed in a centrifuge to separate the platelets and plasma from the other blood components. The PRP injection delivers these cells to the injury site, and the released growth factors stimulate tissue regeneration. Thus, PRP injections harness and strengthen the body’s natural healing abilities.

PRP Treatment Procedure: Blood Draw Banner

Blood Draw

The PRP injection procedure begins with a blood draw from your arm. We collect a vial and process it in a centrifuge machine

to concentrate the platelets while removing the other components, such as red blood cells.

PRP Treatment Procedure: Preparation Banner

Preparation

First, the target area must be cleaned and sterilized. Using ultrasound guidance to ensure precision, we inject small amounts of PRP into

the damaged tissue. The number of injections depends on the size of the treatment area. We insert the needle directly into the affected tendons, ligaments, joints, or muscles. Once the substance enters the tissue, the concentrated growth factors in the platelet-rich plasma stimulate the healing and repair process.

After Procedure

The procedure takes less than an hour, from
the blood draw to the final injection. Some mild discomfort may occur, but we will provide local

anesthetic if needed. After administering platelet-rich plasma, we wrap and protect the area to keep it stable and support natural regeneration.

PRP therapy involves multiple sessions. Most treatment plans include a series of 3-4 injections over several months. However, some conditions may require up to 6 or more visits.

Recovery After Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections

The recovery time after getting PRP treatments is usually fairly short. Since the procedure is minimally invasive, most patients can return to normal activities within less than 24 hours. Some soreness, swelling, bruising, or stiffness are common for the first 1-3 days after PRP injections. Dr. Gary Curson will provide post-treatment instructions and activity recommendations based on the treated area and the severity of the condition.

Ideal Candidates for PRP Foot Treatments

Platelet-rich plasma treatments are designed for people with chronic or acute orthopedic injuries. It works best for patients with osteoarthritis, tendinitis injuries, acute ligament/muscle strains, or joint inflammation. They should have localized pain that is confirmed through imaging or scans. In most cases, acute conditions are healed with PRP if they have failed to respond to initial conservative treatments, like rest, ice, compression, medication, or physical therapy. PRP cannot be injected into patients who are currently pregnant, breastfeeding, or on blood thinning medication. They should have normal blood with no disorders.

Sprained Ankle
There are doctors who talk and those who help you walk again pain free. Doctor Curson is among the latter breed. I limped in with a sprained ankle approaching the size of a grapefruit and in pain. An hour later, I was walking normally having had X-rays, a shot, and a laser treatment. If you are in the Bal Harbour, Surfside or Bay Harbor area, don't bother with anyone else. The entire staff is efficient and dedicated. He followed up with me as well. Caroljean Kier

He fitted me for custom made orthotics (shoe inserts) and after a week of wearing them the pain in my left foot is practically gone. As I wear them more I'm confident I will be able to take long walks again. Without hesitation I recommend Dr. Curson if you have foot issues or pain.

Laser treatment for ankle sprain
Amazing doctor and amazing staff, very friendly and they take the time to know your history and seek the best treatment possible for your specific case. I decided to give them my full confidence for a chronic ankle sprain that just wouldn't go away. The laser treatment was really helpful and they did a set of custom orthotics that are really much better than the off-the-shelf stuff and others I had made before.

Amazing experience with Dr. Curson and his office staff. I had 2 issues, pain in my foot from stepping on an object that seemed to be lodged in there somewhere, AND, terrible nail fungus from years and years of cycling and running. Dr. Curson dislodged the object in my foot and treated the nail fungus with a special laser. After the first treatment it was more that 50% better, i can't wait for the 2nd one, I can feel the difference in my nails. Fantastic office and staff and doctor... go see him!
