What Is a Foot Ulcer?

Foot ulcers are open sores that develop on the feet, usually on the bottom and sides. They can range from mild skin irritation to deep wounds that reach the bones. Foot ulcers are commonly caused by diabetes, peripheral artery disease, or other conditions that affect blood flow and foot sensation. Without timely treatment, these wounds can become infected or lead to serious complications, including amputation. Proper foot care and prompt interventions are important for managing foot ulcers.

Types of Foot Ulcers

Diabetic Foot Ulcers
Diabetic foot ulcers are open sores that develop on the feet of people with diabetes. They are caused by high blood sugar levels damaging nerves and vessels in the lower leg. Poor circulation and lack of sensation make feet vulnerable to injuries that do not heal properly. Patients with diabetes should control their blood sugar levels to prevent and treat diabetic foot ulcers. Their lower extremities must be monitored regularly.
Pressure sores, also called bedsores or pressure ulcers, develop when an area of skin is under constant pressure. This usually occurs in people who are bedridden or use a wheelchair. The pressure restricts blood flow to the skin, causing it to break down and form an open ulcer. Keeping the risky areas dry and changing positions frequently helps prevent pressure sores.
Venous ulcers occur due to improper vein functioning in the legs. Faulty valves in the veins cause blood to pool in the lower extremities, leading to swelling, discoloration, and open sores. Compression stockings and leg elevation can help improve circulation and heal these wounds.
Arterial ulcers are caused by reduced arterial blood flow to the lower extremities. People with atherosclerosis or diabetes are at higher risk of this condition. The decreased blood supply causes the skin to break down and create painful sores. Quitting smoking, managing diabetes, and certain medications can help improve arterial flow and address this problem.
Neuropathic ulcers are a type of chronic wound caused by nerve damage. Common causes include diabetes, vascular disease, infections, and autoimmune disorders. Neuropathy leads to a loss of protective sensation in the feet, so patients cannot feel pain, heat, or cold. This lack of perception means that wounds go unnoticed, causing tissue breakdown and deep sores. Neuropathic ulcers are typically found on the bottom of the feet or at pressure points.

Sprained Ankle
There are doctors who talk and those who help you walk again pain free. Doctor Curson is among the latter breed. I limped in with a sprained ankle approaching the size of a grapefruit and in pain. An hour later, I was walking normally having had X-rays, a shot, and a laser treatment. If you are in the Bal Harbour, Surfside or Bay Harbor area, don't bother with anyone else. The entire staff is efficient and dedicated. He followed up with me as well. Caroljean Kier

Foot Pain
My experience with Dr. Curson and his staff was excellent. I've been dealing with foot pain for over 6 months and after implementing his treatments my pain has decreased significantly. He fitted me for custom made orthotics (shoe inserts) and after a week of wearing them the pain in my left foot is practically gone. As I wear them more I'm confident I will be able to take long walks again. Without hesitation I recommend Dr. Curson if you have foot issues or pain.

Laser treatment for ankle sprain
Amazing doctor and amazing staff, very friendly and they take the time to know your history and seek the best treatment possible for your specific case. I decided to give them my full confidence for a chronic ankle sprain that just wouldn't go away. The laser treatment was really helpful and they did a set of custom orthotics that are really much better than the off-the-shelf stuff and others I had made before.

Amazing experience with Dr. Curson and his office staff. I had 2 issues, pain in my foot from stepping on an object that seemed to be lodged in there somewhere, AND, terrible nail fungus from years and years of cycling and running. Dr. Curson dislodged the object in my foot and treated the nail fungus with a special laser. After the first treatment it was more that 50% better, i can't wait for the 2nd one, I can feel the difference in my nails. Fantastic office and staff and doctor... go see him!
