Causes of Foot Pain

The causes of discomfort vary greatly, including but not limited to diseases, deformities, improper shoes, and foot injury. Here is a brief overview of the most common issues:
These are thickened areas of skin that develop in response to friction or pressure. While calluses are generally larger and flatter, corns are smaller and have a hard center. Both can cause pain when walking or wearing shoes, especially if they develop in sensitive areas.
This condition causes joint inflammation, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion. Several types of arthritis can affect the foot, including osteoarthritis (breaking down of cartilage) and rheumatoid arthritis (immune system disruption). The pain typically worsens with activity and can be accompanied by swelling and warmth in the affected joints.
This deformity causes toes to bend downward at the middle joint, resembling a hammer. It may result from muscle imbalance or ill-fitting shoes. Hammertoes can cause pain when walking, making it difficult to find comfortable footwear. They often lead to corns and calluses on the affected toes.
This condition occurs when the edge of a toenail grows into the surrounding skin. It typically affects the big toe and causes significant pain, redness, and swelling. If left untreated, ingrown nails can become infected, leading to more severe aches and complications.

Plantar Fasciitis

This condition involves the inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue running across the bottom of the foot. It typically causes intense heel pain, especially when taking the first steps in the morning. The pain feels like a stabbing sensation and can worsen after long periods of standing or physical activity.

This is an overuse injury of the Achilles tendon, the large tissue connecting the calf muscles to the heel bone. It commonly affects runners and athletes, causing pain and stiffness along the back of the heel, particularly in the morning or after exercise. The discomfort typically worsens with activity and improves with rest.
These injuries occur when ligaments, muscles, or tendons are stretched or torn. Ankle sprains are particularly common and can cause swelling, bruising, and difficulty bearing weight. The pain may range from mild to severe, depending on the extent of the injury. The main problem with sprains is that they cause foot and ankle instability, leading to torn ligaments and other complications.
Fractures in the foot can result from direct trauma, repetitive stress, or conditions that weaken bones. They cause immediate, severe pain, often accompanied by swelling, bruising, and inability to bear weight. Some fractures are minor (stress fractures), while others may be complete breaks caused by acute injury requiring immediate medical attention.
Bunions are bony bumps at the base of the big toe, making it point toward the other toes. They can cause chronic pain, redness, and joint swelling. Bunions often make wearing shoes uncomfortable and may worsen over time if left untreated.

How Is Foot Pain Treated?

Treatment varies for each case, depending on the cause of pain and the location of the affected area. The first-line recommendations for easing the discomfort include getting plenty of rest, icing and heating the target zone, pain relievers, and keeping the foot elevated to avoid swelling. If these conventional measures do not work, Dr. Curson can offer professional treatment options, including the following:

MLS Laser Therapy This therapy uses a specific type of laser to alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, and promote healing in soft tissues. It can address tendinitis, arthritis, and other musculoskeletal conditions.

Soundwave Therapy This non-invasive treatment uses acoustic waves to stimulate healing in injured areas. It is often utilized for conditions like plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis, and other types of soft tissue damage.

Sports Medicine Involves a range of treatments for foot pain caused by overuse or sports-related injuries, such as strains, sprains, fractures, and tendonitis. Sports medicine may include physical therapy, rehabilitation, and sometimes cortisone injections or medications.

Custom Orthotics These are specialized shoe inserts designed to correct alignment issues, reduce pressure on specific foot areas, and alleviate pain caused by conditions like flat feet, plantar fasciitis, or bunions.

During the initial consultation, Dr. Curson studies each patient’s medical history to offer the most suitable treatment. We always customize procedures for individual circumstances and needs.

Sprained Ankle
There are doctors who talk and those who help you walk again pain free. Doctor Curson is among the latter breed. I limped in with a sprained ankle approaching the size of a grapefruit and in pain. An hour later, I was walking normally having had X-rays, a shot, and a laser treatment. If you are in the Bal Harbour, Surfside or Bay Harbor area, don't bother with anyone else. The entire staff is efficient and dedicated. He followed up with me as well. Caroljean Kier

Amazing doctor and amazing staff, very friendly and they take the time to know your history and seek the best treatment possible for your specific case. I decided to give them my full confidence for a chronic ankle sprain that just wouldn't go away. The laser treatment was really helpful and they did a set of custom orthotics that are really much better than the off-the-shelf stuff and others I had made before.

Amazing experience with Dr. Curson and his office staff. I had 2 issues, pain in my foot from stepping on an object that seemed to be lodged in there somewhere, AND, terrible nail fungus from years and years of cycling and running. Dr. Curson dislodged the object in my foot and treated the nail fungus with a special laser. After the first treatment it was more that 50% better, i can't wait for the 2nd one, I can feel the difference in my nails. Fantastic office and staff and doctor... go see him!
