What Is Achilles Tendinitis?

Achilles tendinitis is a common problem characterized by inflammation and irritation of the Achilles tendon, the largest tendon in the body connecting the calf muscles to the heel bone. This painful condition typically develops gradually over time and is often associated with overuse, particularly in athletes and active individuals participating in running, jumping, or other high-impact activities. Achilles tendinitis can cause foot pain, stiffness, and swelling along the back of the heel, especially during and after physical movement. While some individuals can be treated with conservative methods, severe cases may require surgical intervention, which typically takes about 30 minutes to an hour to complete. Achilles tendinitis can affect one or both legs and is most common in middle-aged people who engage in sports or physical activities.

Our Treatments for Achilles Tendinitis

The causes of discomfort vary greatly, including but not limited to diseases, deformities, improper shoes, and foot injury. Here is a brief overview of the most common issues:
MLS (multiwave locked system) laser therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to reduce inflammation and accelerate tissue repair in the Achilles tendon. This painless treatment penetrates deep into the tissue, promoting cellular regeneration and increasing blood circulation. The therapy typically requires several short sessions and can provide both immediate pain relief and long-term healing benefits.
Physical therapy is crucial in treating and preventing Achilles tendinitis through targeted exercises and techniques. Dr. Curson can design a personalized program that typically includes stretching exercises and manual therapy. The program gradually progresses as healing occurs, helping to restore flexibility and strength while preventing future injuries. These sessions may also include education about proper form and movement patterns to prevent recurrence.
Pain Relievers
Over-the-counter and prescription medications can help manage the pain and inflammation associated with Achilles tendon rupture or injury. Standard options include NSAIDs, like ibuprofen and naproxen, which reduce symptoms and provide relief. For more severe cases, Dr. Curson may prescribe stronger anti-inflammatory medications.
Alternating between ice and heat therapy is an effective treatment for Achilles tendinitis that helps manage pain and promote healing. Ice therapy reduces inflammation and numbs the area. It is typically applied for 15-20 minutes during acute pain or after activity. Heat therapy is used between ice treatments. It increases blood flow to the affected area and helps relax the tendon. This combination treatment is most effective when done 2-3 times daily.
Custom orthotics are specially designed shoe inserts that provide targeted support and help correct biomechanical issues contributing to Achilles tendinitis. These devices are created from precise measurements of the patient’s feet and gait pattern. Custom orthotics can help reduce stress on the Achilles tendon by improving foot alignment and distributing pressure more evenly. They are particularly effective when combined with proper footwear and can help prevent future episodes of tendinitis.
Soundwave therapy, also known as extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT), uses high-energy acoustic waves to stimulate healing in the Achilles tendon. These waves promote blood flow, break down scar tissue, and trigger the body’s natural healing response. The non-invasive treatment typically requires multiple sessions and has shown promising results in reducing pain and improving function for chronic cases.
Consultation & Preparation for Treatment Banner

Consultation & Preparation for Treatment

Preparation for Achilles tendinitis treatment begins with a thorough consultation, during which Dr. Curson evaluates the patient’s symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle factors. He performs a physical examination, checking for tenderness, swelling, and reduced flexibility in the Achilles tendon area. Diagnostic imaging, such as ultrasound or MRI, may be ordered to confirm the diagnosis and assess the severity of the condition. Dr. Curson also analyzes the patient’s footwear, exercise routine, and biomechanics to identify potential contributing factors.
We always ensure a clear understanding of the treatment timeline and potential lifestyle modifications that may be necessary during the recovery process. The preparation phase may also include arranging physical therapy sessions and organizing a suitable home exercise space for prescribed stretching and strengthening exercises.

Recovery From Achilles Tendon Injury

Complete recovery from Achilles tendinitis typically takes 6-12 weeks, though patients after surgery may require up to six months. The initial phase focuses on reducing pain and inflammation through rest, ice therapy, and modified activities. As symptoms improve, gentle stretching exercises can begin, followed by a progressive strengthening of calf muscles and Achilles tendon.
To prevent re-injury, the return to normal activities must be gradual. Most patients start with low-impact exercises before advancing to more demanding activities. Full recovery is achieved when a person can perform heel raises without pain and participate in their usual activities without discomfort. Maintaining proper form during movement, wearing appropriate footwear, and continuing strengthening exercises help prevent recurrence after recovery.

Sprained Ankle
There are doctors who talk and those who help you walk again pain free. Doctor Curson is among the latter breed. I limped in with a sprained ankle approaching the size of a grapefruit and in pain. An hour later, I was walking normally having had X-rays, a shot, and a laser treatment. If you are in the Bal Harbour, Surfside or Bay Harbor area, don't bother with anyone else. The entire staff is efficient and dedicated. He followed up with me as well. Caroljean Kier
